General Tips for those with Oral Health and Physical Disabilities

Posted .

Caring for someone’s health when they have a disability can be rather challenging. One thing that people with disabilities need is good oral health. Are you struggling to help someone with a new oral health routine? Spartan Family Dentistry is delighted to help.

If you are struggling to complete their oral health routine in the bathroom because it is too small or for other reasons, remember that this isn’t the only place that you can care for someone’s teeth. You might try the kitchen or dining room instead. Choose a place with good lighting. Instead of a sink, consider seating the individual at a table. Place the toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and a bowl and a glass of water within easy reach.

Dental care may be scary for some people with disabilities. You can help your client feel at ease by using the “tell-show-do” approach. Basically, before you actually brush or floss their teeth, you can talk to them and demonstrate what you will do. Be consistent. The same technique at the same time and place every day will help soothe their fears.

When you take your client to the dentist for the first time, it’s important to know their dental and medical history. Though there are some records that Spartan Family Dentistry will keep, it helps to jot down a few things about each appointment so you can know what works and what doesn’t. Remember to bring information about insurance, billing and legal information.
